Original Hatikvah Broadcast - 1945 Bergen-Belson

by RKNews last modified 2007-05-10 23:01

This link will lead you to an incredible radio broadcast made on the day that the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated. On that Sabbath eve, those Jews who had remained alive sang a song of faith and hope for all the world to hear! Now you can hear it, too!

Scott Simon of National Public Radio presents a report on a unique and inspiring recording of the "Hatikva" made 61 years ago.

This was broadcast originally over the BBC in May 1945 when the  British liberated Bergen-Belsen.

A British priest organized prayers for Kabbalat Shabbat for the portion of the survivors who were Jews, a celebration they would experience for the first time after 6 years of war and more than 10 years of persecution.

With a lot of effort the Jews organized themselves. They knew they were being recorded. They sang "Hatikva" to a world that had largely abandoned them to their fatef.

The original text is the orginal text as written by Naftali Imber.
